Gas Furnace Efficiency

Proper Maintenance Improves Gas Furnace Efficiency

It can be tough to make ends meet these days. Economizing has become a newly revived trend, as we rediscover the tools and tricks that helped our grandparents make it through the Depression. However, it can be hard to make that leap, as our lifestyles are so much different than theirs were. Simplicity was already a way of life for them and they didn't have our life of 24/7 input and entertainment. This can make it difficult to find the best ways to cut back without completely upsetting normal existence. Luckily, some things never change, like saving money by increasing your gas furnace efficiency. This little trick is still simple and can be a useful tool to cutting your budget.

First, it's great to realize that most furnaces are made for higher levels of efficiency. In fact, unless your unit was made before 1992, it is required to turn at least 72% of its fuel into usable heat, which is great. However, if you just switch it on and forget about it, you gas furnace efficiency will not be near what it should be. This can end up costing you money, which is rather unfortunate, as the fix is simple, easy and only takes an hour or two of your time.

Experts recommend that every homeowner give their furnace a maintenance check before winter sets in. This is actually simple to do. You can find the specific maintenance protocol for your model by checking your manual. However, increasing gas furnace efficiency is accomplished about the same for each unit. First, turn off the power to the unit before messing with things. You will then take apart the front housing of your furnace. Pull out the fans and clean off any visible dust and grime. Inspect the motor as well. Vacuum out the crevices while everything is pulled out. You can then put it all back together and hook the power back up. Finally, you will want to relight the pilots and inspect each nozzle to ensure that they are burning properly. You may need to adjust them at this time.

As you can see, it is extremely easy to perform maintenance on your gas furnace. The process is simple, but can increase your gas furnace efficiency a lot. When there is build up in the system, air doesn't blow through as well and more gas and electricity has to be used to get the same amount of heat. Of course, that costs you money. By performing annual maintenance on your model, you can be sure that it will always be running at its best.
